Summary

Dr. Muhammad Tariq is a distinguished academician, researcher, and industry collaborator, currently serving as Professor and Head of the School of Engineering, as well as Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, at the FAST National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES), Islamabad, Pakistan. He previously served as the youngest Director of FAST NUCES Peshawar Campus, successfully completing his three-year tenure in December 2020. Since 2016, he has also served as a Visiting Research Collaborator at Princeton University, NJ, USA. Dr. Tariq brings a rich and diverse academic background, having earned his advanced degrees through prestigious international scholarship programs: Postdoctoral Fellow (Fulbright Scholar, USA), PhD (MEXT Scholar, Japan), and MS (HEC Scholar, South Korea). He has authored over 80 high-impact research publications, primarily in IEEE Transactions and HEC Platinum category journals, with a cumulative impact factor exceeding 650. His research expertise covers a broad range of emerging and cross-disciplinary domains, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Grids, Digital Twins, Precision Agriculture, and Intelligent Transportation Systems. He also leads the Smart Technologies and Applied Intelligence Research (STAIR) Lab, advancing innovative solutions across key technological domains. In recognition of his academic and research contributions, Dr. Tariq has been ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists by Stanford University and Elsevier since 2023. He has supervised 10 PhD graduates, many of whom now hold prominent positions in leading universities and research institutions worldwide. His international research footprint is further highlighted by his co-authorship of a seminal book on Smart Grids (John Wiley & Sons, 2015), written in collaboration with globally renowned researchers, including a Nobel Prize winner. Demonstrating strong leadership in securing competitive international funding, Dr. Tariq secured EUR 350,000 joint funding under the prestigious NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Program, where he serves as the NATO Country Partner Director. He has also served as a National High-End Foreign Expert for China in 2017, 2019, and 2023, contributing to major state-funded research initiatives. Nationally, Dr. Tariq has led multiple R&D projects worth over 120 million PKR, partnering with industry to advance innovation in AI, IoT, and cybersecurity. He also won SAARC energy centre funding worth 43,800 USD. Beyond academia and research, Dr. Tariq plays an active role in national technological advancement. He is a member of the Government of Pakistan’s National AI Taskforce and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) IoT Working Group. He frequently evaluates R&D proposals for leading national science and technology bodies, supporting the adoption of emerging technologies in industrial ecosystems. Dr. Tariq has represented Pakistan in over 25 countries, delivering keynote talks at prestigious conferences and collaborating with top-tier institutions across China, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the USA, and other regions. A Senior Member of IEEE, he has held several leadership roles, including Chairman of the IEEE Peshawar Subsection (2019–2023) and Chair of Conference Activities for the IEEE Islamabad Section. He is also the Founding Chairperson of the Pukhtunkhwa Open Source Foundation (POSF), promoting open-source technology adoption and digital literacy across the region.
